Montgomery County, Ohio Inmate Search

An inmate search is an online tool typically offered by government entities that operate jail systems, allowing individuals to check who is in custody. Persons using these tools can only locate inmates booked into facilities within the agency’s jurisdiction, i.e., federal search tools for federal inmates and state search tools for prisoners of the specific state.

In Montgomery County, the Sheriff’s Office, which operates the Montgomery County Jail, provides a public tool to locate inmates in custody. However, this inmate search tool does not contain information on inmates in the state-run Dayton Correctional Institution, which is also located in the county. Instead, individuals should use the offender search tool provided by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

In addition to locating inmates, inmate search tools can provide personal, booking, and case information for each inmate, such as full name, physical descriptions, arrest and housing details, custody status, and case/charge descriptions. Still, the extent of information provided often depends on state laws, the record custodian, and the information available during booking.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Montgomery County Jail?

During booking, the Montgomery County Jail creates trust/commissary accounts for inmates to deposit the cash in their possession or receive funds that can be used for jail expenses. Family and friends can fund an inmate’s account through two main channels:

  • In-person deposits through the automated kiosk at the jail lobby
  • Online deposits with the authorized online vendor (JailATM).

For in-person deposits, visitors may bring cash or valid credit cards (along with valid IDs to enter the facility). Depositors must provide the inmate’s name or booking/ID number and may be required to pay a small fee to complete transactions. The kiosk may also accept mailed money orders, but interested persons should confirm instructions from the facility/Inmate Account Clerk at (937) 225-5793.

On the other hand, online deposits may require loved ones to:

  1. Create an account and verify your email address
  2. Find an inmate first by state and facility name, then by inmate ID number or name (or first 3 characters of their last name)
  3. Deposit funds and pay fees by providing payment information (using valid and accepted credit or debit cards).

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

Montgomery County is home to a county jail and a state-run correctional institution. Therefore, finding inmates in each facility will require different inmate search tools, namely:

While persons using the Sheriff’s search tool can only search by name and booking number, the DRC offender search tool offers more search criteria, including:

  • Last name
  • First name
  • Offender number (should begin with "W" for female inmates in DCI)
  • County of commitment
  • Residential county
  • Zip code
  • Offender status (incarcerated, APA supervision, violators at large, or all)
  • Next parole board hearing date

Additionally, since most inmates in Ohio state prisons are convicted, DRC offender searches typically provide sentence and parole hearing information, along with offense details.

Note: Online search is not available for youths in juvenile detention centers.

  • Mailed photographs must be sexually explicit or contain nudity
  • All books must be mailed from the publisher and include the inmate’s name and ID number.
